The purpose of this information sheet is to briefly highlight some of the measurable successes of the MiniChess® educational program since initiating roll-out in 2011.
Highlights of the MiniChess® Educational Program
University Studies and Participation
The University of Pretoria performed a study on the impact of the MiniChess program on School-readiness. The study results below illustrate the impact (%) on holistic Early Childhood Development, doing the MiniChess program at a test school, once per week over a 5-month period:
The MiniChess program has being implemented at 250+ schools in South Africa (and 8 African countries) with 65,000+ learners participating. Many more sponsors and universities are interested in the benefits of the learning-through-play MiniChess program: University of Johannesburg did an impact-study on specifically mathematics-development through MiniChess in Soweto-schools – with results showing much improvement in number-sense (adding & subtracting), graph-reading and pattern recognition in maths, as well as much improvement in social-skills, concentration, problem-solving & critical skills in general. Motshitshi Primary school in rural-Limpopo illustrated their math pass-rate to improve from below 50% to above 80% in all foundation phase-classes, after implementing MiniChess from the beginning of 2017. Many schools show OVER-ALL report-marks to improve (average 40%) after implementing MiniChess from the early years, with the biggest impact in mathematics-scores (up to 70% improvement in year 1).
Local & International accreditation
Marisa van der Merwe, developer of the MiniChess program, won the Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Award 2012, category Education (Top educational-program 2012). It is also accredited by CHESSA, FIDE and is considered a “game-changer” by many schools using MiniChess for Early Childhood Development.
MiniChess was invited to present at various internationally recognised Education Conferences: Women in the World (New York, 2013), Global Conference of the Ass. for Childhood Education (Vancouver, 2014), London Chess & Math Conferences (2013, 2014 & 2015), WISE (World Innovation Summit on Education, Qatar, 2014) – attended by 120+ countries, where MiniChess was nominated for an innovation award.

MiniChess co-presented at the 10th Global Visual Literacy Conference in Lisbon (2015), of which a publication was included in an e-book by Oxford University in 2016, and also presented at the International EduWeek 2016 & 2017 in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa.
Kasparov Chess Foundation Endorsement
The Kasparov Chess Foundation-Africa endorses the MiniChess program, and also incorporates the program in their roll-outs in various countries. Grandmaster Garry Kasparov, ex-World Chess Champion, calls MiniChess “the most scientific program in the world, linking chess with Education”.
The Kasparov-MiniChess mobile game was launched in 2015 on all mobile platforms, towards enriching the MiniChess in-class program.
