Our Queen does it again!
In a world where the strength and influence of women are more celebrated than ever, Marisa van der Merwe, CEO and Founder of MiniChess and MindCo, stands as a beacon of inspiration. On the 22nd of August 2024, she took the stage as one of the keynote speakers at the SACBW (South African Council for Business Women) conference, held at the prestigious Candlewoods Boutique Venue. The event, a grand celebration of Women’s Month, was a resounding success, uniting industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to honour the power and potential of women in business.
Marisa van der Merwe is no stranger to success. As a multiple EduPreneur, she has built an impressive legacy through her three pioneering companies in the game-based teaching and training sector. Her journey began with the founding of MiniChess Pty Ltd, a company with a mission to empower young minds through the strategic and intellectual challenge of chess. MiniChess now boasts registered intellectual property across five continents, with materials translated into eight languages. Her passion for education and training did not stop there; she expanded her vision by establishing MiniChess Franchise Holdings, which currently has 29 franchisees in South Africa and globally, and MindCo Pty Ltd, with multiple franchisees.
At the heart of Marisa’s work is a commitment to empowering today’s leaders and the next generation. Her dedication to driving innovation in education through neuro-backed, action-based training is a testament to her belief in the power of local knowledge. By establishing franchised business owners in their own communities, regions, and countries, Marisa is not only creating opportunities but also fostering a culture of sustainability and self-reliance.
The SACBW conference provided the perfect platform for Marisa to share her insights and experiences with a captivated audience. Her speech resonated deeply, particularly her analogy of the queen in chess as a metaphor for women in business. In chess, the queen is the most powerful piece on the board, capable of moving in any direction with strength and agility. Similarly, women in business navigate a complex landscape, making strategic decisions, adapting to changing circumstances, and leading with vision and determination. Just as the queen protects and supports the king, women in business play a crucial role in safeguarding and advancing their companies, communities, and industries.
Marisa’s commitment to education and community development extends beyond her business ventures. She is a trustee of The Entrust Foundation, which aims to break inter-generational cycles of poverty by equipping the youth in South Africa with the skills and tools they need to succeed. Her work with The Entrust Foundation reflects her belief that a teachable, trainable, and employable youth is key to building a sustainable future.
A proud winner of the SACBW National Award in 2018 in the Community category, Marisa is a dedicated supporter of women in business and the work of the SACBW. Her involvement with various organisations, including Ashoka and Tendrel, further underscores her passion for social entrepreneurship and the role of small businesses in building a sustainable economy.
Marisa’s influence is not limited to her professional life. Married to her high-school sweetheart, Willem, she is a devoted mother of three adult children and a loving grandmother. Her love for South Africa, with its friendly people, wildlife, blue skies, and ocean, is evident in everything she does.
As Marisa van der Merwe concluded her speech at the SACBW conference, the audience was left with a sense of empowerment and inspiration. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of women in business, much like the queen on a chessboard—strategic, resilient, and indispensable.
